Brunch at Husk in Charleston, SC

We didn't stay in Charleston for more than a day - made the mistake of going the week of July 4th. It was HOT and not to offend anyone but our family was very underwhelmed of what we thought would be a cute town. Maybe it is still recovering from flood damage but it certainly didn't capture the southern charm we expected. We did, however, have brunch at Husk. This is one of the two restaurants in Charleston led by Sean Brock, a James Beard award winning chef. The other restaurant being McCrady's. Husk is in a traditional Charleston house with a double porch. We weren't expecting the crowds and did not have reservations, so on this absolutely melting day we were seated on the upper porch. After downing a glass of cold weather, dining on the porch wasn't that bad, although the air conditioned rooms would have been more welcomed. My husband and I both got the blueberry waffles with shortbread crumble and they were absolutely delicious and it was a big portion. If we hadn't been in a hotel we each could have taken some leftovers back. Prior to the waffles, we had the fried cinnamon drop biscuits with caramel peanuts and chocolate sauce. I thought these were a bit dry and would preferred a traditional glaze on them with a larger quantity to combat the dryness. My husband thought they were fine though. My son Nick had the Filli west style omelette. For an appetizer he had the griddled sweet corn muffin with South Carolina peaches, house ricotta and mint. I am not a fan of corn anything, so I didn't try it. Unfortunately, my son wasn't feeling well and I don't think he could appreciate the meal as much as he wanted. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgable and I would definitely recommend a meal at Husk. I think lunch or dinner would have been a better option, because there is not too much adventure you can do with breakfast meals.
